Elevations
M
y artistic journey has led me to ever more intimate compositions,
allowing the artistry of manufactured items to be put on display. Analogous to Duchamp's
Readymades, I
invite the viewer to decide whether the objects are works of art in themselves, or whether it is the elevation
of them to a museum-like setting that creates the works of art. The wear and tear visible on the objects gives
testament to their functional nature; embodied in
a wrench is a story of shelter, machinery, inventors, and workers.
The works reference visual styles of the past to emphasize the iconic and timeless nature of things manufactured.
The still lifes, each elevating a single object, are inspired by the clean compositions of Spanish Baroque painter
Juan Sánchez Cotán.
