Elevations
I
find myself drawn to ever more intimate compositions,
allowing the artistry of manufactured items to be put on display. Like Duchamp’s
Readymades, I invite
the viewer to decide whether the objects are works of art in themselves, or whether it is their elevation to a
museum‐like setting that makes them works of art. The wear and tear visible on the objects gives testament to
their functional nature; the designers of these objects sculpted them to meet their intended use.
The works reference visual styles of the past to emphasize the iconic and timeless nature of things manufactured.
The still lifes, each an elevation view of an object, are inspired by the simple compositions of Spanish Baroque
painter Juan Sánchez Cotán.
